1977
Fast forward to 1977 where Po continued the traditions of her mother as an adult with her own family. Every Christmas Eve Po’s entire family and friends would gather at her home for Christmas carols, games, and of course gumbo and Po’s new addition, homemade eggnog. Now that too has become a welcomed tradition. Po faithfully makes the egg nog during Thanksgiving weekend, then it’s placed in the fridge and only touched to rotate all its goodness until Christmas Eve. What a treat!!!
2020
In 2020 Po did her first Pop Up as Po’s Kitchen, and to her surprise it was an immense success with people from all over the Bay Area placing orders. This gave Po the confidence to officially launch Po’s Kitchen as a full time catering business and she is ready and raring to go.
1958
Before she was affectionately known as Po to her grand kids Barbara Freeman and her family moved to California in the Summer of 1958, and fortunately her mother brought all of her cooking skills with her. It wasn’t long after that Po learned how much southern cooking was missed and needed out west. Po’s mother’s friends began asking her to make pots of gumbo for them on special occasions, along with Po’s father’s wonderful peach cobblers. It was on one of these occasions in 1963 that Po earned her first quarter while serving as her mother’s sous chef; chopping the veggies for the gumbo pot. Po never felt so proud when that quarter was placed in her hand.
2013
Po retired in 2013, and after hosting many afternoon teas for her mom and sisters, numerous Easter Brunches, festive Mardi Gras and Halloween parties for her family, she decided to take her show on the road. Po started taking on a few catering jobs; a Bridal Shower here, a Corporate event there, and things took off.
